Faerie is a world that exists both parallel to and within our world. The creatures that live in Faerie, known as fae, are magical beings that are the origin of all non-human species that reside in Faerie and the human world alike. Humans are unaware of Faerie, though occasionally a hapless human will wander into Faerie never to be seen again or will be abducted by the Fair Children, a particularly dangerous breed of Fae, for some unknown nefarious purpose. There are places where Faerie and the human world meet – woods, ponds, mirrors – portals between the worlds… but hope you never encounter such a place, and certainly do not listen to the song should to arrive there.
The Unseelie Court
The Unseelie Court, known as the court under the moon, lies to the west of the mountain range that divides the two courts. The sun never rises in the Unseelie court, instead enjoying bright, full moonlight at mid-day with the moon setting at dawn and dusk. Fae living in the Unseelie court naturally have very pale skin adapted from living in dark conditions. Unseelie fae are known to possess deformities – non-human features such as clawed hands, horse hooves for feet, snake like skin, etc. that they hide using their glamor.
The Unseelie Court was formed when the First Queen, Fire, along with a number of knights and nobility were banished from the Seelie Court at the end of the Seelie Civil War. The Unseelie fae drove out many of the lesser fae that called the region home, though some of the more stubborn tribes remind behind in smaller numbers in the dark and dangerous forest that neighbors the palace and borders the human world.
It is believed that dragons have been hunted to extinction in the Unseelie court, but recent reports suggest otherwise…
The Seelie Court
The Seelie Court is believed to have been created by the Goddess and that She left behind the teachings as a guideline for how they should rule their court and live their lives. Unlike the other court, the Seelie court is always under the sun with a sunset and sunrise marking midnight. Fae of the Seelie court are ubiquitously blonde and green-eyed with golden tan skin from long days in the sunlight. Seelie fae believe they are the One True Race of fae and do not allow lesser fae or Unseelie fae to live within the court. They have a long, bloody history of discrimination and hatred that King Leo, the current ruler of the court, works to undermine so as to dismantle the Seelie perception of superiority.
The relationship between the Seelie and Unseelie courts has improved significantly during the rule of King Leo in the Seelie Court and Queen Lune in the Unseelie Court. There is some talk that one day the courts may even re-join under one rule. However, their relationship with other castaways for their era of xenophobia are not on the same good speaking terms and war with the Between may be imminent.
The Between
The Between, as the name suggests, lies between the courts and the human world. As such, time passes differently there than it does in the courts or the human world, reality is warped, and the fae that reside there are very comfortable interacting with lesser fae, a number of supernatural beings native to the human world, and with humans themselves. The Between is disjointed due to being spread out in patches of land that exist where the courts touch the human world, and each place where the Between exists has its own lord or lady. They are all ruled by King Caesar… who also happens to operate the Faerie side of Caesar’s Palace located on the Las Vegas strip, the heart of Faerie activity in the human world.
Between Fae are cursed with an unusual magic that forces them to consume the emotions and thoughts of others to sustain themselves. They thrive in high-energy places, particularly areas where humans are prone to strong emotional response, where it is easiest to feed. The Between also is home to a number of lesser fae that were driven out of both the Seelie and Unseelie courts, which has given the Between a reputation for being incredibly dangerous.
The Beyond
The Beyond is the mythical fourth court that is spoken of in the teachings. It is supposedly the home of the Goddesses as well as the final resting place of souls that have fulfilled their destinies in life. The City in the Clouds is described in some detail in the teachings – a place for souls to rest and watch over their loved ones from beyond, but little is known beyond the imagination of the people of Faerie as to what the rest of the Beyond might be.
Seelie fae believe that they were directly descendant of the Goddesses and that the Seelie court was originally built in the image of the Beyond.
